REPORT TO THE GENERAL PURPOSE AND ADMINISTRATION COMMITTEE MEETING
HELD DECEMBER 16 1984

SUBJECT: PROBE letter of December 1st 1983 dealing with
the location of an Industrial Waste Landfill
Site in Lewiston, New York.

RECOMMENDATIONS:
It is respectfully recommended that the General Purpose and Administration
Committee recommend to Council the following:
1. That this report be received;
2. That the Town of Newcastle write to the Ontario Minister of Environment
indicating our concern for the location of a disposal site, industrial
or otherwise, that might eventually impair water quality on Lake Ontario.
The letter should ask the Minister to investigate the location of the
Lewiston, New York site and advise the Town of the position of the
Provincial government.
3. That a similar letter be sent to the Federal Minister of Environment
noting our concerns and requesting the Federal Minister to investigate; and
4. That copies of the letter be sent to the local M.P., M.P.P. and
Pollution Probe.
BACKGROUND AND COMMENT:
Resolution #C-11-84 referred the attached letter to the Chief Administrative
Officer for a report to the January 16th General Purpose and Administration
Committee meeting. Pollution Probe is soliciting support for their
opposition to a proposed industrial waste disposal site in Lewiston, New York.
At the time of writing this report, I have been unable to discover much about
the details of the proposal. However, given its location in another Country
it would seem more appropriate for the Town to voice any concerns through
the Federal and/or Provincial government.
As we share a common concern with many other municipalities and jurisdictions
it would seem appropriate to note our general concern about the Lake water
quality and ask the Federal and Provincial levels of government to investigate
