CORPORATION OF THE TOWN OF NEWCASTLE
40 TEMPERANCE STREET
BOWMANVILLE, ONTARIO
LIC3A6 TELEPHONE 623-3379
REPORT TO THE GENERAL PURPOSE AND ADMINISTRATION COMMITTEE
MEETING HELD FEBRUARY 6 1984
ADMIN. 16 - 84
SUBJECT: REVIEW OF INSURANCE PROGRAMS
RECOMMENDATIONS:
It is respectfully recommended that the General Purpose and Administration
Committee recommend to Council the following:
1. That this report be received;
2. That the Corporation postpone a review of their insurance program
until 1985 budget discussions.
BACKGROUND AND COMMENT:
By Council Resolution #GPA -918-83, Council requested that I report on the
possibility of conducting an insurance review.
I have briefly examined the subject matter and feel that it is in our
best corporate interest to delay any review of our insurance program until
1985. This recommendation is based on my conversations with a number
of other municipalities that have been involved with insurance review.
The Town of Ajax has recently completed a review and it is my understanding
that the Corporation of the Region of Durham is at considerable expense,
undertaking such a review. The results in Ajax are difficult to evaluate
at this point in time. Further, I have spoken to representatives of a
number of other municipalities who switched their insurance carrier.
There has been mixed reaction to such changes both from a service and
long term savings perspective.
WHile I feel that we should examine our insurance coverage, it can be a
substantial undertaking. I would like to collect additional information
from those municipalities that have undertaken a review, and provide
such information to Council prior to any monies being spent on such a review.
ADMIN 16 - 84
I believe that if this issue is examined in conjunction with
our 1985 budget considerations, it will provide the necessary
time to collect this information.
