REPORT TO THE GENERAL PURPOSE AND ADMINISTRATIN COMMITTEE
MEETING HELD FEBRUARY 20 1984
ADMIN. -ON4
SUBJECT: MINTING OF BICENTENNIAL COINS
TELEPHONE 623-3379
RECOMMENDATIONS:
It is respectfully recommended that the General Purpose and Administration
Committee recommend to Council the following:
1. That this report be received;
2. That Council authorize the expenditure of $6,000 from the Bicentennial
Account,*712-2094-2 to front-end the cost of having a Tenth
i Anniversary and Bicentennial coin minted.
The receipts from the sale of such coins being returned to the
Bicentennial Account;
3. That Council authorize staff to apply for financial assistance
from senior government sources if possible; and
4. That the Bicentennial Committee be advised of Council's actions.
BACKGROUND AND COMMENT:
The Bicentennial Committee has been considering for some time possible
Bicentennial Projects which would be sponsored by the Committee. One of the
projects selected is the minting of a Bicentennial coin. It is being
suggested that approximately 10,000 coins be minted. These coins would
feature the Provincial Bicentennial Crest on one side with the Town of
Newcastle crest on the other side. The Town crest would be flanked by
the years 1974 - 1984. The edge of the coin would feature the following
printing: Town of Newcastle Tenth Anniversary Trade Dollar.
Members of the Bicentennial Committee have discussed this matter and have
made arrangements to distribute the coins in a similar fashion to that
which was undertaken in connection with the Bowmanville 125th celebrations.
The authorization of funds would cover the minting of the coins and
advertising costs for their distribution.
Respectfully submitted,
DSJ:nof David Johnston, M.C.I.P.,
Chief Administsrative Officer
