Subject: Highways No. 2 and 35/115. Crossing Roadway Names. Background: Following discussion by the Committee at the Meeting of April 3, 1979, Resolution # W-69-79 was passed, as follows: - "THAT the traditional names on the north/ south roads in the Municipality be retained, as indicated in Report # 122, dated February 19, 1979, with brackets after the name in- dicating the number; in Clarke numbers would run from 1 - 100 and in Darlington from 100 - 200, and roads which do not have trad- itional names assigned to them, be the subject of a Staff Report on method of selecting suitable names". Report: I have concerns in relation to the foregoing resolution as it is indicative that all roads would have the following identification: - (a) Number. (b) Road Name. (c) Name of former Municipality. It should be noted that Road and Street Name Signs are of variable lengths, depending on the number of letters required; the width of Signs, however, is usually the standard 6k" (six and a quarter inches). Any attempt to fulfill the requirements of Resolution # W-69-79 would necessitate signs being in the nature of a 'special order' which would increase, substantially, the costs to the Town. No. 162 Report, continued... In relation to the request for a method of selecting suitable names, this matter raises several items for consideration. Notification of the Public must be considered and, in the event that "family" names are suggested for roads, the written per- mission of the relevant family would be required, prior to their use. Comprehensive information relative to Resolution # W-69-79 has been transposed onto a map of the Municipality, which is avail- able for review by the Committee. Recommendation: (a) THAT Concession Roads running east/west remain the same as at present, and be further identified by the name of the former Municipality: e.g. "Con. 6. Darlington". (b) THAT roads and streets which have been named by By -Law shall remain so -named. (c) THAT maps be displayed in public places indicating the proposed names for north/ south roads and streets and that they be further identified by the name of the former Municipality. Any public input could be documented and submitted to the Public Works Committee. JD;vh No. 122 TOWN OF NEWCASTLE, PUBLIC 14ORKS DEPARTMENT Di. rector's Report. to Public Works Committee. 1t em: Resolutions Nos. W-181.-78 & W--182-78. Date: Pebruary 1.9, 1979.. Subject: Highway No. 2. & 35/:115. Crossing Roadway Names. Ii:ckground The Ministry ul'. Transportation & Communications annually reviews their signing, re.lati.ve to the indication and identification of roadway names at intersections on the subject highways. correspondence was received in 1978 regarding this matter and the Pub1i.c Works Committee, at the Meeting of May 1.1, 1978, gave consideration to same and to Report U 48 (attached) resulting in the passing of the abovementioned Resolutions Nos. W-181 & 182-78. Report: Since May of :L978 Staff has spent a considerable amount of time identifying all roads and streets, not legally named by By -Law, within the Town of Newcastle. The information collected has been transposed onto a map of the Municipality. The names shown are not necessarily recommended, but are given as an indication )f names which could be given consideration. It should be toted that all roads and :streets have been identified, not just those which fall under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Transportation & Communications. It would appear that there are two alternatives to be considered: - (a) The naming and/or numbering of all north/south roads and streets.' (b) Concessions, running east/west, should remain as now or could be. further identified by the addition of the Ward norther, end former Municipality name, to the sign. e.g. "Concession 6, Ward 1, Darlington". I%ort No122_ Recommendations: (1) THAT Staff be given direction regarding the naming and/or numbering of all north/south roads and streets. (2) THAT concession roads remain as at present; when signing these they can be identified also by Ward number and/or the name of the former Municipality. (3) THAT roads or streets which have been recently named by By -Law shall remain as at present. .IU:vh
