3. UPDATES
Spring Clean-up
The 2018 Spring Clean Sweep at the SWNA occurred on Saturday April 21. Thirty-
five people volunteered at the SWNA. The clean-up was held in conjunction with the
clean-ups for the Port of Newcastle and Bond Head. At all three locations 204
volunteers picked up 1700 lbs of trash. Following the clean-up a BBQ sponsored by
Enbridge was held for the volunteers at the Admirals Walk Clubhouse.
Pooh Sticks Bridge Plaque
The plaque in memory of Melanie McArthur, long-time member of the SWNA
Committee, has now been installed on the Wilmot Creek Bridge. A photo of the
installed plaque was circulated at the meeting.
Birdhouses
Approximately 48 birdhouses were cleaned his spring by several of the committee
members. It appears that 80-85% of the boxes were occupied in 2017. Eighteen
additional birdhouses have been donated by Port of Newcastle resident Kevin
Leckie. Those birdhouses are now installed along the south side of the hydro
corridor on the Toronto Street side of the SWNA. A thank you letter will be sent from
the committee to Kevin Leckie.
Fishing line disposal containers
At the April 2018 meeting Leo Blindenbach suggested that fishing line disposal
containers be installed at the SWNA in locations convenient to anglers. Several of
these, made from poly pipe, have been installed by Bowmanville Anglers along the
Bowmanville Creek. Leo was able to obtain free material from Rono Newcastle and
6 containers were built by volunteer Kevin Leckie. The locations for the containers
will be determined and installed in the coming weeks. Brian Reid will request 6
additional T -bars for the installation from Operations. Thank -you letters will be sent
to Rona and Kevin Leckie.
4. ACTION ITEMS
OPG Planting Project May 26
On Saturday May 26 at 11:OOAM a project to plant 500 nectar plants will be held at
Port of Newcastle Waterfront Park. This project is an extension to the planting that
was done in 2017. OPG will be sponsoring the event to plant butterfly and pollinator
friendly perennials. Meaghan Vandenbrink and Rod McArthur have confirmed their
availability. All SWNA members are encouraged to attend if they are available. The
planting locations will be marked with spray paint the day before the event to make
it easier for volunteers to plant in the correct locations.
The plants have been ordered from Chalk Lake Greenhouses and will be delivered
at 10:15 the morning of the event.

Friends of Second Marsh Festival June 2
In 2017 the SWNA Committee had a booth at a public event organized by Friends
of Second Marsh at the McLaughlin Bay Wildlife Reserve in Oshawa. Approximately
450 people attended the event therefore it was a great opportunity for spreading
information about the SWNA. This year's event will take place on June 2 and the
committee will request a booth again this year. A map showing the various features
of the SWNA will be displayed. Kate Potter and Tom Hossie will attend on behalf of
the committee.
Soper Creek Wildlife Event June 9
The committee will be hosting a public event, themed around urban wildlife, on-site
on Saturday June 9 from 10:30 -noon. The event will take place just north of the
Toronto Street parking lot. In case of rain the Dianne Hamre Recreation Centre has
been booked from noon -2:00 PM. Stefanie MacEwan from Soper Creek Wildlife will
bring a porcupine, skunk, opossum, ground hog and bob cat for their presentation.
A poster for the event will be prepared by Clarington Tourism and Marketing and will
be distributed digitally to all committee members. Five large laminated versions and
50 letter size prints of the poster will be available next week.
The sponsor for the event is Jackie Winterfield from Remax. She will be
acknowledged on the event poster and she has agreed to reimburse the
municipality for the cost of the event.
Fall Monarch Tagging September 9
Following the success of the 2017 monarch tagging where 487 monarchs were
tagged and inventoried, the committee has decided to tag monarchs again in 2018.
Saturday September 8 has been determined as the date of the event with a rain
date of Sunday September 9. Five hundred tags will be ordered from Monarch
Watch later in the summer. Brian Reid is looking into a finding a donor to purchase
butterfly nets to supplement those that we borrow from GRCA.
