1.0 BACKGROUND
1.1 At the Council meeting of May15, 2006, Council considered correspondence from
Yvonne J. Williams, Director of Marketing of Driftwood Theatre Group, requesting
financial support in the amount of $500.00 to assist with the group’s performance
in Bowmanville on August 3, 2006, as part of the Outdoor Summer Theatre tour
production of Shakespeare.
2.0 COMMENTS
2.1 The Driftwood Theatre Group is a regionally-based incorporated non-profit
organization which was founded in Durham in 1995. The group strives to provide
accessible cultural programming to communities throughout the province.
2.2 One of the major events of the Driftwood Theatre Group is the Outdoor Summer
Theatre tour. This summer a production of Shakespeare will be delivered in 20
communities across the province, at various outdoor venues.
2.3 These productions are provided on a Pay What You Can admission fee structure
to ensure the theatre is accessible to all. The municipal grant would be applied to
Pay What You Can admission at the Bowmanville production to ensure
accessibility for Clarington residents.
2.4 In 2004, the Driftwood Theatre Group received a $500.00 Municipal Grant to
assist with the production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream at the Visual Arts
Centre in Bowmanville.
