BACKGROUND AND COMMENT:
At the General Purpose and Administration Committee meeting of September 4th
the Mayor and Councillor Cowman, as liaison Councillor to the Clerk's office,
were asked by G. P. &. A. resolution #865-84 to report on the sailing
trials Which were currently under way in Toronto. As a result of these
trials "Coug II" has won the honour of challenging for the Canada Cup
against the American entry "Stars and Stripes". "Coug II" was built by Wiggers
Custom Yachts Ltd. which are located opposite the Darlington Marina. As part
of the background of preparing a report, I had the opportunity to meet with the
owner and operator of Wiggers Custom Yachts Ltd. Over the years Wiggers
q
/ ADMIN. 76 - 84
Custom Yachts Ltd. have developed an excellent internatioral reputation
for yacht building. Mr. Wiggers employs approximately 15 skilled
tradesmen and builds 8 - 10 yachts per annum.
While staff have tried to identify possible promotional opportunities,
it is most difficult to make definitive arrangements on short notices given the
number of agencies that are involvedin the organizing of the Canada Cup Races.
Mr. Wiggers has indicated his full co-operation with any promotion of either
the Town or his company. It would be appropriate given the international
audience attracted by yachting to promote the Town of Newcastle both
locally and in Toronto.
The recommendations as outlined in this report provide an opportunity
to promote the Town both locally and in Toronto.
Until we have received more detailed information from the organizers of
the Canada Cup and the Royal Canadian Yacht Club in Toronto, it is
impossible to set a specific itinerary.
