40 TEMPERANCE STREET
BOWMANVILLE, ONTARIO

REPORT TO COUNCIL MEETING HELD SEPTEMBER 24 1984
ADMIN. 80 - 84
SUBJECT: ADVERTISING OPPORTUNITIES IN CONNECTION
WITH COUG II AND CANADA'S CUP
TELEPHONE 623-3379
HAND OUT
RECOMMENDATIONS:
It is respectfully recommended that Council:
1. Receive Administrator's report ADMIN. 80 - 84;
2. Authorize the advertisement of the Town of Newcastle in conjunction with
Wiggers Custom Yachts and the Canada's Cup Sailing Races by providing
up to $500 from the Mayor's Receptions and Tributes Account to be spent
on the purchase of advertising space in an appropriate sailing magazine.
BACKGROUND AND COMMENT:
As the successful defender of the Canada's Cup, Coug II has brought honour
to Canada and in particular to the Town of Newcastle. A victory by Coug II
adds yet another impressive victory for boats built by Wiggers Custom Yachts
in Bowmanville.
As I am sure members of Council can imagine, sailing races and in particular the
Canada's Cup attracts a very wide audience. Many of the people involved with
Canada's Cup are also involved with Canadian industry. It is for this reason
that staff is recommending that up to $500 be spent on advertising the Town
of Newcastle in appropriate sailing journals. It is anticipated that owing to
the cost of the ads we might co -venture an ad with Wiggers Custom Yachts and
possibly Susan Shoes. In discussing the matter with the Regional Industrial
Development Commissioner, it was felt that the journal "Sailing News" is
perhaps the best journal to advertise in given its extensive readership.
If Council authorizes any expenditure, staff would co-ordinate the ad in
conjunction with other participating bodies.
Respectfully submitted,
DSJ:nof David .Johnston, M.C.I.P.,
Chief dministrative Officer
