REPORT TO THE GENERAL PURPOSE AND ADMINISTRATION COMMITTEE
MEETING HELD OCTOBER 15 1984
ADMIN. 82 - 84
SUBJECT: Council and General Purpose and Administration
Committee meetings following holiday Mondays
RECOMMENDATIONS:
It is respectfully recommended that the General Purpose and Administration
Committee recommend to Council the following:
1 That Administrator's report ADMIN. 82 - 84 be received;
2 That one of the two following courses of action be adopted:
a) That no change be made to the meeting schedule or
b) That all General Purpose and Administration Committee meetings
following a holiday Monday commence at 3 p.m. on the Tuesday
following the holiday Monday and all Council meetings commence
at 7 p.m. on the Tuesday following a holiday Monday.
BACKGROUND AND COMMENT:
At the General Purpose and Administration Committee meeting held September
17th Administrator's report ADMIN. 78 - 84 was referred back to staff for
further consideration.
As stated at the meeting there does not appear to be a solution that satisfies
all requirements. In reviewing the 1985 calendar, there will be six
occasions when the meeting schedule of the Town of Newcastle conflicts
with possible Regional meetings. Three such occasions will involve the
General Purpose and Administration Committee meetings and three will
involve Council meetings. Generally speaking, Council meetings tend to be
somewhat shorter than General Purpose and Administration Committee meetings.
From the comments made at the September 17th meeting of the General Purpose
and Administration Committee it is obvious that Council does not feel that
a General Purpose and Administration Committee meeting can be handled
within the time frame of a 7 p.m. meeting. It is therefore being suggested
ADMIN. 82 - 84
that such meetings for the General Purpose and Administration Committee
commence at 3 p.m. However, the Council meetings could start at 7 p.m.
In considering the possible course of action, Council should recognize
that we are introducing a second starting time for the General Purpose
and Administration Committee. Currently all General Purpose and
Administration Committee meetings start at 9:30a.m.
