REPORT TO THE GENERAL PURPOSE AND ADMINISTRATION COMMITTEE
MEETING HELD JULY 2 1985
ADMIN. 46 - 85
SUBJECT: POSSIBLE ADVERTISING ON VANS
RECOMMENDATIONS:
It is respectfully recommended that the General Purpose and Administration
Committee recommend to Council the following:
1. That Administrator's report ADMIN. 41 - 85 be received
for information.
BACKGROUND AND COMMENT:
At the June 3rd 1985 General Purpose and Administration Committee
meeting by Resolution #GPA -368-85, staff were asked to investigate
the possibility of placing advertising on the side of a van
promoting the Town of Newcastle. Staff contacted Mr. Maurice Preston
for background information on this idea. Mr. Preston advised that
some years ago the Chamber of Commerce for the then Town of Bowmanville
supported this concept and had a van painted promoting the Town
of Bowmanviile.
If Council wishes to support the notion of painting a van, it is
suggested that it be a joint effort between the Town and local
industries and that advertising space be sold to local industries
along the bottom and ends of the van. The estimated cost to the
Town to have both sides of the van painted is approximately $1,500.
If Council wishes to proceed it is suggested that a maximum contribution
of $2,000 be established and that said costs be absorbed by the Town
through the Industrial Reserve Account #1110-X-163-9.

ADMIN. 46 - 85
For Council's information, I have attached a possible schematic of what
might be appropriate to put on the side of the van if the Town
were interested in pursuing this option. A slogan "The Town of
Newcastle on the Mcve" would be the prominent lettering with
advertising space being available to private concerns along the
bottom and ends of the van.
The location map would be similar to the one which is found in
our industrial brochure and an apple blossom would complete the
prominent components of the advertisements.
At the General Purpose and Administration Committee meeting, staff
will have available pictures of the previous van which was painted.
If Council is interested in this issue, the following motion
may be appropriate:
"That staff be directed, in conjunction with local
business concerns, to proceed with the painting of a
van promoting the Town, provided costs do not exceed
$2,000 and that the Town's contribution to this
effort be drawn from the Industrial Reserve Account
#1110-X-163-9.
All of which is respectfully submitted,
David S. ohnston, M.C.I.P.,
Chief A 'inistrative Officer
