That Administrator's report ADMIN. 71 - 85 be received; 2. That Council not proceed towards the consolidation of the archival material":at this point in time. BACKGROUND AND COMMENT: When the Newcastle Community Services Planning Board reported on the operation i of the Museum facilities within the Town, the recommendation was made that the archival material should be consolidated into one location by 1988. The matter was subsequently referred to staff for a report. At the present time, archival material is scattered throughout various facilities and indeed some private homes I throughout the municipality. While in theory we can all agree that archival material should be consolidated and available under one roof, it is perhaps premature to deal with this issue until both Museums have had an opportunity to consolidate their roles within the community. In discussing this matter briefly with the Chairman of the Newcastle Community Services Planning Board, it was agreed that considerable more dialogue and research would have to be done prior to any consolidation of archival material. This would include discussions with historical societies, Museums and the Library Board. Such basic matters as what constitutes material that should be treated as archival would have to be resolved to everyone's ADMIN. 71 - 85 -2- mutual satisfaction. If Council wishes further research on this matter at this time, it may be appropriate to refer this particular aspect back to the Board with the request for further examination as to how such a consolidation should take place. This examination would involve extensive discussions with various concerned parties including the Library Board, Museums and the Historical Society. Respectfully submitted, Davi S. Johnston, M.C.I.P., Chief Administrative Officer
