REPORT TO THE GENERAL PURPOSE AND ADMINISTRATION COMMITTEE
MEETING OF MARCH 22nd, 1982
SUBJECT: TOWN OF NEWCASTLE "PROMOTION DAY"
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
RECOMMENDATIONS:
1. That this report be received for information.
-------------------------------------------
BACKGROUND AND COMMENT:
The Mayor and the Administrator met on Tuesday, March 16th, 1982
to discuss the proposed format and organization of the "Promotion Day"
for the Town of Newcastle and have prepared the following suggestions for
the consideration of the committee.
1. It is recommended that the "Promotion Day" be one day only, and
that it be convened on Friday, April 30th, 1982 in the Newcastle Village
Hall. It is felt that the hall is suitable because it offers several small
rooms for individual workshops, ("sessions"), as well as having space for a
general meeting of all participants.
2. It is proposed that there be six (6)'§essions"; three (3)
convened in the morning of April 30th and three (3) in the afternoon. Each
of these "sessions" would involve a Member of Council and a member of
Staff, and it would be the responsibility of these persons to organize
an hour's session in respect of the following six subject areas:
Agriculture and Rural Living
Commerce and Urban Redevelopment
Culture and Recreation
Housing
Industry and Trade
Tourism.
Subject to the concurrence of Council, it is suggested that
Councillor Taylor work with Fred Archibald on the agriculture and rural
living session. It is further suggested that Councillor Hubbard work
with Kathryn Campbell on Commerce, Councillor Prout with Bud Fanning
on culture and recreation, Councillor Hamre with Terry Edwards on
housing, Councillor Woodyard with John Blanchard on industry and
Councillor Cowman with David Oakes on tourism.

The Mayor and D. Smith, Administrator would be responsible
for the overall organization of the day and would be consulting to each
"session".
3. It is suggested that the day would begin at 10:00 a.m., with
introductory remarks and coffee in the meeting hall and that the groups
would break-up to attend the individual sessions at approximately 10:30 a.m..
The sessions would last until 12:00 noon, at which time a luncheon would
probably take the format of a buffet and it is hoped that there would be
a luncheon speaker. The afternoon sessions would convene at approximately
2:00 p.m., and would last until approximately 3:30 p.m., at which time
there would be coffee served and a brief concluding session in the main hall.
4. It is suggested that each one of the session leaders (Councillors)
would be responsible for providing a list of persons they would wish to
invite and that written invitations with a program would be forwarded
to all potential participants by the second week of April. It is
hope that each of the session leaders could advise the Mayor by the
end of March, 1982 as to how they are going to organize their program
and who they might wish to have participate in their "session" so that
the program invitations, etc., can be prepared and sent out.
5. It has been estimated that the entire day could be run on
a budget of not more than Two Thousand Dollars ($2,000.00).
Respeclly submitted,
D. Smith, M.C.I.P.,
Administrator
G. B. Rickard,
Mayor
