REPORT TO THE GENERAL PURPOSE AND ADMINISTRATION COMMITTEE
MEETING OF APRIL 2nd, 1984

RECOMMENDATIONS:

It is respectfully recommended that the General Purpose and
Administration Committee recommend to Council,the following:
1. That this report be received; and
2. That Council donate the sum of Twenty -Five Dollars ($25.00)
to the Orono Horticultural Society to be used as a prize
for the person obtaining the most points in the horticultural
shows demonstrating apples and apple blossoms throughout
the year; and
3. The amount of $25.00 be charged to Account No.
7007-0235-X-5.

BACKGROUND AND COMMENTS:
I have been contacted by Mrs. Isabelle Challice of the Orono
Horticultural Society who advises me that in 1984, the Society will be asking
participants in their shows to emphasize the apple blossom and the apple.
A schedule of the 1984 shows is attached hereto.
Since 1984 is the Tenth Anniversary of the Town of Newcastle and
since the apple blossom is our floral emblem, I would suggest that Council
donate the amount of $25.00 to be used as a prize for the person obtaining
the most points in all of the apple demonstrations throughout the year.
This amount should be charged to Account No. 7007-0235-X-5, Receptions and
Tributes.

SPRING FLOWER SHOW - May 24th, 1984
Class 28 - "Apple Blossom Time"
A salute to our Regional emblem.' Use your own interpretation.
SUMMER SHOW - August 16, 1984
Class 57 - "An Apple a Day" - an arrangement featuring apples.
FALL SHOW - October 4, 1984
Class 21 - "Apple of my Eye". - A basket arrangement featuring apples,
flowers and foliage.
NOVEMBER SHOW - November 22nd, 1984
A Christmas "gift package" featuring the use of "apples"
Our shows this year are featuring "apples", our native fruit, and the
apple blossoms are the Town of Newcastle's emblem.
