RICKARD, MAYOR MAYOR'S REPORT NO. 1-85 LOCAL GOVERNMENT WEEK - JANUARY 14th to 19th, 1985 TELEPHONE 623-3379 RECOMMENDATIONS: It is respectfully recommended that the General Purpose and Administration Committee recommend to Council the following: 1. THAT "Open House" be held at all Municipal Offices and Buildings from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., on Thursday, January 17th, 1985; and 2. THAT a letter be forwarded to various organizations and the schools throughout the Municipality advising that the period January 14th to 19th, 1985 will be recognized as "Local Government Week", but that the program for municipal awareness and participation will carry on as appropriate to May 31st, 1985; and 3. THAT this letter indicate to the various organizations and schools that Members of Council will be available, upon request,during that period,to meet with them to discuss the role of municipal government; and 4. THAT a letter be sent to the Secondary Schools in the Municipality inviting each school to select a student who would spend a day with the Mayor and Members of Council to learn more about local government. BACKGROUND AND COMMENT: The Committee appointed by Council to respond to the invitation from the Honourable Claude Bennett M P P the Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing with respect to Local Government Week and an opportunity for 2� ............i2 �P�.� REPORT TO THE G.P.A. MEETING OF JANUARY 7th, 1985 MAYOR'S REPORT No. 1-85 citizens to participate, has met. The Committee has decided that rather than concentrating the efforts of municipal awareness during one week, that the programs which would encourage this awareness should be carried on for a longer period. A letter will be sent to the schools and various organizations advising that all Council Meetings are open to the public and invite them to attend a meeting. The letter will also indicate that Members of Council will be available to speak to students and various groups, upon invitation, on the role of local government. A letter will also be sent totheSecondary Schools inviting them to select a student who would spend a day with the Mayor and Members of Council. All of which is respectfully submitted, GARNET B.
