L1C3A6- TELEPHONE 623-3379 REPORT TO TFIE GENERAL PURPOSE AND ADMINISTRATION COMMITTEE MEETING OF MAY 6th, 1985 FROM: GARNET B. RICKARD, MAYOR SUBJECT: MAYOR'S REPORT No. 9-85 RECOMMENDATIONS: It is respectfully recommended that the General Purpose and Administration Committee recommend to Council the following: 1. That this report be received for information. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- BACKGROUND AND COMMENT: The industrial tour was arranged on April 29th, 1985 with the objective of becoming better acquainted with the variety of industry within our Town and we visited eight places in all. From observations gleaned during the tour, it was evident that all the industries were pleased to have us in attendance and to explain their operations. We also found that every industry we visited was in the process of expansion or making plans for expansion. This is indicative of the prosperity and opportunities which are afforded in this Municipality. During the visits and discussions, representatives of the various industries explained some of the needs and concerns they have; ie. road improvements, access and other basic services for a healthy industry. I think it is important that we, as a Town, recognize the importance of having access and road systems to serve those industries and this should remain a high priorityin our Town. I think that we should be encouraged by the number of people who are working in private and corporate industries in our Municipality and who are contributing substantially to the economic baseof the Town and providing employment. I_am firmly of the opinion that the best way to promote the Town is to have the people who live in it and who are working within the Town to be proud of the place in which they live. I was particularly pleased to hear the supportive and complimentary remarks that oil were made by the representatives of the industries in their appreciation of ( /2 Mayor's Report 9-85 -r Lb) -Page 2- May 6th, 1985 the co-operation that they had received from Town staff. In attendance with Council, we had Mr. Johnston, our C.A.O. and Mr. Gerard Gervais, Commissioner of Economic Development for the Region of Durham. Mr. Gervais was high in his praise of what he saw and learned and the tour gave him a much greater appreciation of the opportunities and potential in the Town of Newcastle. I have written to each of the industries and have thanked them on behalf of Council for their co-operation in giving us the opportunity to visit their place of business and appreciation for what they are doing and for their courtesies extended to us during those visits. I want to thank the Members of Council and Staffwho attended on that day. I believe that it was a very worthwhile event. Respectfully submitted, GARNET B. RICKARD, C.M. Mayor GBR/mr
