REPORT TO THE GENERAL PURPOSE AND ADMINISTRATION COMMITTEE
MEETING OF JUNE 17th, 1985
SUBJECT: MAYOR'S REPORT NO. 11-85
NEWCASTLE VILLAGE DISTRICT HISTORICAL SOCIETY
RECOMMENDATIONS:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
IT IS RESPECTFULLY RECOMMENDED THAT THE GENERAL PURPOSE AND ADMINISTRATION
COMMITTEE RECOMMEND TO COUNCIL THE FOLLOWING:
1. That this report be received; and
2. That receipt of the sum of $6,000.00 be acknowledged and a letter
be sent to the Newcastle Village District Historical Society
congratulating them on their project of re -printing Professor
Squair's book and for the prompt re -payment of the loan; and
3. That Council consider the purchase of copies of Professor
Squair's book to be used as gifts.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
BACKGROUND AND COMMENT:
A few months ago, Council was approached by representatives of the
Newcastle Village & District Historical Society, which representatives asked
Council to assist the Society in their project, by way of a loan to finance
the re -printing of John Squair's book, "The Townships of Darlington and
Clarke".
This project, the sale of the reprinted editions of this book, has
met with considerable success and at the dance on Saturday evening, which dance
was sponsored by the Society, a cheque in the amount of $6,000.00 was presented
to me, on behalf of Council, representing full re -payment of the loan.
As this book is a significant part of the history of our
Municipality, I believe Council should consider the purchase of some copies
of Professor Squair's book to be used as gifts on appropriate occasions.
Respectfully/submitted,
GARNET B. RICKARD, C.M.
