RICKARD SUBJECT: MAYOR'S REPORT No. 12-85 CITIZEN OF THE YEAR AWARD ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- RECOMMENDATIONS: It is respectfully recommended that Committee recommend to Council the following: 1. That this report be received; and 2. That five (5) persons be chosen to receive a "Citizen of the Year" award; 3. That two (2) of the five persons chosen to receive an award be young people in recognition of International Youth Year; and 4. That recognition of the "Citizen of the Year" award recipients be held at a public event to be held sometime in November of 1985; and 5. That a letter be written to various organizations in the Municipality and advertisements be placed in the local newspapers to request nominations of individuals for this award; and 6. That nominations of indivduals for the "Citizen of the Year" award be submitted to the Clerk of the Town of Newcastle by October 15th, 1985; and 7. That selection of the names of those individuals who will receive a "Citizen of the Year" award will be made by Council by way of secret ballott. BACKGROUND AND COMMENT: In 1984, Council established the "Citizen of the Year" award to recognize individuals in the Town of Newcastle for their outstanding contributions to society. Eleven persons were recognized last year, ten because of the Town's Tenth Anniversary and one for the eleventh year. In 1985, I would suggest that the Town recognize five ....../2 REPORTTO G.P.A. COMMITTEE -Page 2- July 2nd, 1985 MAYOR'S REPORT No. 12-85 citizens, two of which should be young people because of the fact that 1985 is International Youth Year. I would suggest that a letter be sent from the Mayor's Office to various organizations asking for nominations of individuals in the Municipality for the "Citizen of the Year" award.
