REPORT #: FD 8-89 FILE #: 10.12.6 SUBJECT: HAZARDOUS MATERIAL COURSE - 40 HOURS - MAY 15 - 19, 1989. RECOMMENDATIONS: It is respectfully recommended: 1.) THAT Fire Department Report FD 8-89 be received; and 2.) THAT approval be given for the two Fire Captains to attend the above-headed, five day course, conducted by the Ontario Fire Marshal's Office and held at Oshawa Fire Department Headquarters. I BACKGROUND AND COMMENTS Notification was received from the Office of the Fire Marshal advising that a five day Regional Fire School will be conducted, covering the handling of a hazardous material incident. This course will be held at the Oshawa Fire Department headquarters May 15th to May 19th inclusive. There are no costs involved for this course. i The course is available to the Region of Durham Fire Department and the Town of Newcastle Fire Department has had space reserved. The Fire Department is usually the initial responding agency to a dangerous goods spill or incident and it is necessary to be kept aware of improvements in the handling of hazardous materials, given the amount of these substances that are transported by road, as well as rail, through our municipality, on a con- tinuous basis. Continued. . .. . 1 FD 8-89 - 2 - This course is structured to train the trainer, so the Fire Department members who attend will return and instruct the other members of their department on the course contents, which ensures that a greater number of firefighters are up-dated on the manner of handling emergency situations. We recommend that approval be given for the two Fire Captains to attend this course. Respectfully submitted, Recommended for presentation to Council k.- M.
