McKnight Absent: Reeve Councillor 1-1rs. A. D. Okc K. Shackelton - Illness In Family Mr. Russell Honey, M.P. (Durham) explained to Council that a decision had been made by the Government to close 68 small customs offices of which Bowmanville is on.e, as an economy measure. The purpose of' the meeting was to determine how best to proceed with a presentation to have the Bowmanville Customs Office remain open. Representatives of industry present, rose to speak in support oT the customs office remaining in Bowmanville. Nr. Ed Daren queried what saving 1V"ould be aff'ected by the closing of this office.. Mr. I.m. Luke of R. M. Hollingsbead felt that the extra cost to be borne by many companies if the office was to be moved to Oshawa woul_rl be unbearable. Mr. Ian Smith of Brookdale-Kingsway was all for economy if a case could be made, but the relocation of 2 men to another office as an effective saving was confusing. His view was that we could not function effectively here without a customs office. Mr. Robert Lawton, President of the Chamber of Commerce felt that the survey upon which the decision was based, was mane before the cOl1siderable changes nOilloT taking place. Hr. Roger Conant of Honeywell Controls filed a brief explaining that one of the advantages here was the "PortH facilities. Hr. Donald Crain of Canadec said that his company imported a high percentage of raw materials from other countries.
