REPORT NO: WD-3-88
BACKGROUND & REPORT:
In 1981, in an effort to minimize the disruption in normal
works activities caused by vacation scheduling, the
Public Works Department initiated a two week vacation shutdown
surrounding the August Civic Holiday.
This practice has been continued for the past few years enabling
the department to better schedule maintenance and construction
activities during the balance of the summer months. Due to
the number of Public Works' employees with three or more weeks
vacation, this two week shutdown minimizes lost productivity
due to vacation scheduling. There are thirty-five (35) outside
workers employed by the Town in the Public Works Department
with a total vacation allotment in excess of six hundred days.
By having a two week shutdown, the department has less than
three hundred days of vacation entitlement to schedule throughout
the remainder of the year.
Favourable acceptance of this report will result in the scheduling
of the vacation shutdown as outlined, with a minimum staff
on hand to provide essential services.
Respectfully submitted, Recommended for presentation
to the Committee,
/Y
Walter A. Evans, P. Eng. Lawrence E. Kotseff,
Director of Public Works. Chief Administrative Officer.
